The design brief consisted of two timber benches encircling very old oak trees. Initially, the first bench with a backrest was to be a free standing structure, nearly hugging the tree trunk, while the second bench would be fixed to a low planter wall encircling the tree trunk. With the same concept applied to both benches, the proposal looked at a module bench unit, for easy manufacturing and assembly, given the roughly 4m diameter of the completed circle of benches. The full circle would be made up of 8 identical segments. A steel frame is clad with custom-sized timber slats, creating an illusion of continuous slats, starting from the ground, winding up the foot supports to the seat slats, and then inclining up along the back rest. This is a collaboration with Pieter Heynecke.
